"Think of poetry as yoga for words. Flowing Tai Chi for feelings. Karate for mental thought. While writing poetry, you can stretch your wordplay, bend your meanings, dive into thematic ideas, and play with a word playground you usually don’t allow yourself to visit. We tend to keep our characters and plots front and center. With poetry, thoughts, feelings, and ideas instead take center stage. That coupled with a wellspring of words to dip into can be very refreshing! Writing poetry—even bad-God-awful poetry—will pull and tug on a creative muscle inside of you and allow a newfound flexibility when you return to your work."
Personal Poetry for Novelists By Gwendolyn Womack

Every year In April I get all poetic about who I am and what matters.

The focus helps me celebrate the spring, re-birth, and my literal birth. This year, I am also celebrating and reflecting on all the ways our dynamic membership and board of directors are bringing fresh ideas and energy into our shared interests and priorities.

As a celebration of all of that, I am keeping this month’s message brief to make way for all the opportunities and celebrations below. Thanks to all of you for contributing content to our monthly newsletters and for sharing and collaborating on our social media channels. And a special thanks to the board members who are generating new ideas and collaborations and managing and marketing the rich content.

We are as brilliant as a hill country roadside during wildflower season!

WiVLA institutional collection at the University of Houston library archive

MJ Figard, our WiVLA Historian, is looking for WiVLA-related physical items to add to the WiVLA institutional collection at the University of Houston library archives.

She is collecting any physical items that members may have and will deliver them to the archives on WiVLA's behalf. At this time, we will focus on physical items. She will coordinate the collection of digital material soon.

The items need not be archival folders or organized in any particular order. The items should be in a box or bag. Please don't put too much in one box/bag to keep them from getting too heavy.

Please put a label on the container (box/bag) with your name and a brief description of the contents.

If you have items, please contact MJ directly via email: figard@earthlink.net. She will work with you on a time and date for you to deliver the containers to her house.

If you have materials for the archive, contact MJ as soon as possible. She wants all the physical material delivered to UH Archives in April.

It will take several months for the Archivist to process the records and have a finding aid/index available for us to access.

Please reach out directly to MJ by email at figard@earthlink.net if you have questions.

Gwendolyn Womack

Hello! Thank you for the spotlight this month. My name is Gwendolyn Womack. Everyone calls me Gwen.

I am originally from Houston and moved away for college eons ago to Fairbanks, Alaska, where I ended up switching my major from environmental science and planting trees in the tundra to majoring in theater.

Then it was on to Los Angeles to get an MFA in theater and film directing. After graduating, I stayed in LA and embarked on writing screenplays. I’m a lifelong writer and have written poetry, theater plays, screenplays, and now books, which has been my main focus for the past ten years.

I moved back to Houston in 2023 and discovered WiVLA shortly afterwards in a serendipitous moment. It has been wonderful to be back and connect with the writing and art community.

Storytelling is my passion, but I also enjoy exploring the visual arts, especially when I need to take a breath from writing—which is why WiVLA is a perfect fit for me. I began painting sporadically in college. Then, ten years ago I started photographing kaleidoscopes. I’ve been sharing those images for years on social media. This past year WiVLA members have inspired me to do more. I recently created a little popup shop on Printify called Kaleidoscope Time with some favorite kaleidoscope images, and I’d love to exhibit my kaleidoscope photography next.

On the book front, I will be launching my newest book, The Premonitions Club, at Murder By The Book on 4/22 at 6:30pm. Please join me with your book loving friends if you can! The story is a YA thriller about a group of teens who discover old boxes filled with letters of psychic predictions, and they are put in the crosshairs of dangerous people who will do anything to get their hands on them. I like to call it The Breakfast Club meets Firestarter, and it is written for teens and adults alike.

If you have a book club, I love doing author talks (please visit the book clubs page on my website), and if you’re connected to a high school who might like to do a book visit, please reach out.

Thanks again for the spotlight! I look forward to all the creative fun times ahead with everyone. This year I am honored to be WiVLA’s Literary Co-Chair with Rebecca Chirak. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any writerly ideas or suggestions you’d like to share.

Cheers!

We celebrate the richness of diverse traditions, histories, and perspectives, recognizing that every writer contributes to the shared human experience.
All IWWG workshops are listed in ET (Eastern Time).
TWO SYLVIAS PRESS is an independent press located in the Seattle area. * Collaboration Catalogs Available! *
We have another excellent collaboration on the books!
Each member who participated in the ENTANGLED Collaboration received a copy of the catalog containing all the artwork and literary pieces. Melody still has a limited supply of copies in her studio that you can purchase for $15.

In addition, you can also purchase additional copies of the REFLECTION catalog from the 2022 Collaboration for $5.
Stop by Studio 320 at Silver Street Studios to purchase additional copies of either catalog. Silver Street Studios is located in the Main Yard of Sawyer Yards. Call ahead at 713-851-0134 to ensure that she’ll be in the studio when you arrive.
